Carol Vernallis (Blog 6)

Carol Vernallis main points:

- The narrative in music videos are not always complete
-Music videos are not always balanced between narrative and performance
-They don't always have a narrative resolution at the end

An example of a music video that uses slow motion:

This clip uses slow motion throughout the video and including some of the beginning to help set the scene of the area and give the audience a brief idea of the location and who is involved within the song. It also gives the audience time to look at the surrounding and people in the song, this could be to give us n insight to the artists surrounding and their everyday life, concentrate of people emotions and facial expressions and it also build suspense at times for the audience as they want to see the next shot.

-Music video that uses special effects:

This video is by So Solid Crew called 21 seconds.
They use special effects within this music video to help create the scene of the music video. For example its edited on a cliff where there is cages and loads of lightening continuously striking to make the setting much more eerie and intriguing to the audience. It also helps establish and understand the character for example one skinny guy had an edit of a skeleton in which it helped identify him. Others had fake eye lenses also to help match the scene and the edits.

-Music that uses bass track:

This song called Panda by Desiigner. The camera purposely uses certain fuzzy shots and swayed shots when the bass tends to come in very heavily. It always tends to shoot back to his face every few seconds to keep a structured video and make sure shots are in place and not scattered, it is changed to the pace and timing of the bass.

- Music video that uses loads of jump cuts:

An example of a music video that uses loads of jump cuts is Eminem without me. This song specifically uses jump cuts to fit in with the tempo and speed of the artists flow. This is because Eminem is known to rap very fast, it is made to make the scene feel very rushed and fast paced which fits in with every element within this music video. It also helps fit in with the stereotypes of the genre as rap is usually very fast and rushed.
